Prescription drugs are commonly misused unintentionally by over using, combining with other drugs, or by mixing with alcohol. Abuse of prescription drugs can lead to addiction, seizures, heart failure, long-term damage to the brain and or body organs, coma and even death. Some teens have been abusing prescription medication by using it for recreational purposes, believing they are a safe alternative to street drugs. Medicine cabinet shopping has become an accepted way for teens to find ways of becoming high. Painkillers such as Vicodin and Oxycodone are some of the most popular prescription drugs with teenagers. Street names include Oxycotton, OC, Oxies, Percs, Vikes and Vikings. Depressants such as anti-anxiety and sleeping pills and stimulants such Ritalin are also favourite choices amongst young people.
